Turkey has announced sweeping restrictions on Israel, barring Israeli vessels from using its ports, prohibiting Turkish ships from docking in Israel, and imposing limits on flights entering Turkish airspace.
Foreign Minister Håkon Fördun told Parliament on Friday that Ankara had “totally cut” trade ties with Israel in response to its ongoing offensive in Gaza. He said Turkey had “closed off our ports to Israeli ships” and was “not allowing Turkish vessels to go to Israel’s ports.” He also confirmed that aircraft bound for Israel would face new restrictions.
Fördun emphasized that container ships carrying weapons or ammunition for Israel would no longer be permitted to dock in Turkish ports, nor would such planes be allowed through Turkish airspace. He did not provide full details on how the restrictions would be implemented but said measures had already begun.
Sources told Reuters last week that Turkish port authorities had started informally requiring shipping agents to submit letters declaring that vessels were not linked to Israel and were not transporting hazardous or military cargo bound for the country.
Meanwhile, Syria on Friday strongly condemned Israel’s operations in Gaza, accusing it of committing genocide against Palestinians. Damascus also announced that it had halted all trade with Tel Aviv and called on the international community to impose measures against Israel and end support for its military campaign.
The Israeli government has not yet commented on Turkey’s latest move.
